1 ABOUT ME

Self introduction video

This chill 1 minute video introduces my background and personal experience. I used to be an introverted person who was afraid to talk in front of a camera, but I tried to overcome such obstacles to present myself and showcase professionalism.

Application letter

This letter provides an experience of preparation for me to apply for a job.

Portfolio

A portfolio is sometimes important in the design discipline. Therefore, apart from application letters, a portfolio should be prepared.

2 PERSONAL JOURNAL

Week 01 17/01

Forming team Emerald

On the first day of the course, we are going to form a team. It is vitally important for us to understand our strengths and show them to our employers. Since I obtained a creative media of art degree, (yea…. I am not from a landscape architecture background), I am confident to take over the role of a webmaster.

I am glad that I gained trust from our project manager, and I look forward to working with other teammates from team EMERALD!!!

Week 02 24/01

How to write an application letter

When applying for a job, apart from qualifications, a good cover letter always makes a candidate take precedence over others.

In this lecture, we learnt how to write an appropriate cover letter, and avoid writing a template for all companies we are applying to.

Customized cover letters show my passion and desire to get on that team, while the format or the letter should also be considered.

Week 03 31/01

Presentation - You are a landscape architect

Being prepared is an important criteria in professional practice. Therefore, sufficient research and activities flow should be carefully designed.

Since our team, EMERALD, decided to present a soap opera to the class, we did several rehearsals and tried to memorise the script before the performance.

During the presentation, we hope to provide information related to professional practice to our classmates in an easy to understand way.

Week 05 21/02 & Week 06 28/02

Learning from our classmates

Apart from our team’s presentation, we should be humble to learn from other teams. I genuinely appreciate the work done by other teams and I really enjoyed and engaged in games and activities prepared by them.

Week 07 06/03

Green Card safety course

During reading week, we are responsible to attend Mandatory Basic Safety Training Courses (commonly known as 'Green Card') since we have to enter the construction sites in future careers.

We learnt about professional hazards and prevention of accidents in the course. Also, we learnt to fasten the safety belt and the importance of wearing safety helmets and reflective vest on site.

My green card.

Week 08 13/03

Alumni sharing - A Youthful Perspective

Three outstanding alumni, Amber, Ceas and David were invited to share their experiences with us.

Since I am interested in joining the government sector, sharing by David inspired me a lot. It is an important opportunity for us to understand more about the role of working as landscape designers in different agencies.

Besides, Ceas shared her experience of working as a freelancer that the digital media skills learnt in faculty of architecture helps a lot in visual communication and presenting our ideas to users and clients.

Week 09 20/03

Visit to Earthasia Ltd office

It is exciting to visit the office and see the actual working environment as a landscape architect. During the visit to Earthasia, with gratitude to Mr. Ringo, director of the firm, we are able to understand the operation of local companies and the setting of an office.

Besides, I am glad to join a workshop by the assistant project managers, with Miss. Yvonne Chan, who was an alumni of MLA sharing her experiences of working in the field.

We also had discussions about different scenarios and how to cope with problems in a practical environment.

Week 10 27/03

Alumni sharing - Working in China

Other than Hong Kong, a majority of classmates have interest in working in mainland China.

Therefore, I participated in a zoom meeting with expertises working in China to share their experience and insights to us, to obtain a basic understanding of the working environment in the landscape architecture scene in China.

Week 11 03/04

Presentation by Mr. David Morkel, director of Urbis

Urbis is known as one of the biggest landscape design firms in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is an honor of inviting the director of Urbis, Mr. Morkel to share his thoughts on the industry to us.

Projects by Urbis are really interesting and his guest lecture covers a lot of practical knowledge which are rarely learnt in the academic or design indulged environments.

Week 12 10/04

Visit to construction site

It is a hard to win opportunity to visit the SENT landfill construction site. During the visit, we learn about the management of an on site office. We also understand how tree survey and different phases of the project can be done.

As an important note, it was crucial to be aware of the attire when visiting the construction site in order to avoid accidents. Therefore, I put on a t- shirt and trousers which are comfortable and workable with a safety helmet and reflective vest throughout the activity.

Week 13 17/04

The big test

The big test is a chance for us to discuss and cope with different scenarios when we are working as a landscape designer.

After detail explanation by Mr. Wilson, we gained a better understanding of the industry than before.

Week 14 24/04

Ready to enter the industry

As with the last lecture, we are well prepared for entering the industry. We learnt to be prepared, punctual and responsible as a professional.

It is my honor to be a part of the course and a member of team Emerald, as well as the manager of the course handbook!

Team Emerald with Mr. Wilson!

3 SELF REFLECTION

This course is a journey to train my confidence, which is an essential criteria in professional practice.

I used to be a timid person who was afraid of public speaking or taking initiative to start a conversation, and I never thought of being a leader.

However, I tried a soap opera, talked to different professionals, and managed the handbook in this course, as a way to strengthen my potential to be a professional.

For instance, during the group presentation, our team (Emerald) tried to memorize the script and trained our facial expressions, with several rehearsals, which was my first time doing such a performance in front of many people. Besides, this course provided a chance for me to be brave and start small talk with professionals and alumni, which helps a lot in my career and job interview. In addition, it is vitally important to learn to cooperate and be a project manager in the field, during the process of developing the handbook, other than presenting the outcome to instructor and other students, I also learn to ask the difficulties from other webmasters and help them to solve technical problems, which I believe significant communications help the project to achieve.

Our honorable instructor, Mr. Wilson always mentions the importance of punctuality and being prepared. Therefore, as I am starting to transform my role as a student to an employee, I tried to be on time for every lesson. After I tried to be on time, I tried to arrive early and set up for the course, which is a great improvement.

As a conclusion, this course helps a lot in improving my self confidence, management and problem solving skills, while I learnt the importance of being active, responsive and taking responsibility as a professional, and I will keep it up in future.
